Huts

When rock shelters were too small to accommodate everyone or when none were available, the Archaic Indians of the Lower Pecos built huts like the one below.

Hut Advantages:

  1. These shelters were easy to construct.
  2. They provided a cool place to stay during the hot part of the day.

Hut Shelter Disadvantages:

  1. These fragile homes provided little protection during storms or cold weather.  Think about it, would you want to build a fire inside one of these to keep warm? You would end up getting a lot warmer than you'd planned!
  2. In addition, huts needed frequent repair.  In short, they didn't last very long.
